Black is the new Green
The first 100% recycled capsule collection
Driade, the Italian brand that has made eclecticism its signature style, is committed to developing a path to support sustainability. It invests in increasingly innovative production systems that guarantee the lowest environmental impact whilst maintaining excellence and focusing on health and comfort.
Sustainability in furniture design is often visualised through light woods, natural tones and organic finishes. But in modern contract interiors, sustainability is no longer defined solely by colour.
In fact, when it comes to commercial furniture for hospitality, workplaces, and public spaces, Black is emerging as one of the most sustainable design choices.
Not because of how it looks — but because of how it performs, lasts and adapts over time.
Why Black Works in Commercial Interiors
Black furniture offers practical benefits that are often overlooked in sustainability discussions:
-
Durability & Longevity
Dark finishes are more forgiving in demanding environments, masking signs of wear and maintaining appearance longer than lighter finishes. -
Design Timelessness
Black integrates effortlessly with changing interiors — pairing with wood, stone, colour accents or biophilic elements without appearing dated. -
Reduced Replacement Cycles
Furniture that visually lasts reduces the need for frequent replacement, cutting down on material waste, transport emissions, and manufacturing impacts.
In sustainability terms, keeping furniture in use for longer is often more impactful than replacing it with a “greener-looking” alternative.
Driade inaugurates Black, the new Green capsule collection comprised of iconic chairs and armchairs, such as Nemo by Fabio Novembre, Roly Poly by Faye Toogood, Pip-e by Philippe Starck, and Sissi by Ludovica & Roberto Palomba, all entirely made from recycled plastic.

The products in this unique collection are identified by a customisation that makes them recognisable and certifies their sustainability connotation, just as the historic red Driade logo is dyed green for the occasion.
Material Quality Is the Real Sustainable Choice
The material for this collection derives from industrial recycling, which comes from internal production waste and is therefore controlled, and from post-consumer recycling, that is, products disposed of through separate collection—such as PET bottles and containers—and recycled, thus giving life to new objects.
All the seats made with this material are homogeneous because neutral colours, such as Black characterise them.
A New Definition of “Green” Design
Sustainability is no longer about visual cues alone. It’s about making informed, responsible decisions that consider:
- Product lifespan
- Material sourcing
- Maintenance requirements
- Adaptability over time
- Environmental impact across the full lifecycle
From this perspective, Black truly is the new green.
By choosing timeless, high-performing furniture finishes supported by quality materials and intelligent design, specifiers can create interiors that are both environmentally responsible and commercially practical.
